Christoph König's latest CD release with the Solistes Européens Luxembourg is the first in a series of releases with Rubicon Classics. This first disc combines Beethoven Symphony No 3 'Eroica' with Étienne-Nicolas Méhul’s First Symphony.
While König was thinking about what repertoire would be most appropriate for this release, it struck him that a somewhat one-sided view is taken of some famous composers. “We focus on the influence composers such as Bach and Beethoven had on their own and later generations of musicians, but tend to ignore the influence that all their contemporaries had on them,” the conductor says. He is of the view, for example, that several works by composers who were active during the French Revolution, such as André Grétry, Étienne-Nicolas Méhul and François-Joseph Gossec, had a major impact on Beethoven.
