Alongside his blossoming conducting career, Paul Watkins remains dedicated to his cello and is one of Britain’s foremost and best loved cellists. His immense musicianship combined with a deep understanding of the repertoire gives fresh interpretations to even the most often performed works.

Well known to British audiences, Watkins has made six concerto appearances at the Proms including a televised performance of the Elgar Cello Concerto at the First Night of the Proms recorded live by Deutsche Grammophon in 2007. Further afield he has recently performed at the Concertgebouw with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra/Kreizberg, in Australia with the Melbourne Symphony and Queensland Orchestras and with RAI Torino.

Watkins is committed to twentieth century and contemporary music. Amongst his recordings include the Britten solo cello suites, Tobias Picker’s Cello Concerto which he premiered at the Proms and Reflections on a Scottish Folk Song by Richard Rodney Bennett. Paul Watkins is signed exlusively to Chandos Records.
