Swiss-born conductor Stefan Blunier opens the season with performances of Tannhäuser and Mahler Symphony No 8 at the BeethovenFest Bonn. As a symphonic conductor he has guest conducted many orchestras in Europe and the Far East including WDR Cologne, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Orchestre National de Belgique, Duisburg Symphony, Orchestre National de Lyon, Bern Symphonieorchester and the Danish National Radio Symphony. He has been appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestre National de Belgique from the 2010/11 season.

Having risen through the ranks of German opera houses becoming Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Staatstheater Darmstadt from 2001-2008, Blunier has guest conducted at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Opera de Montpellier, Norwegian National Opera, Hamburg Staatsoper and the Komische Oper Berlin where he conducts Prokofiev’s Love of the three Oranges this season. He makes his debut at English National Opera with the original version of Henze’s Elegy for Young Lovers in spring 2010.

Stefan Blunier formed the Ensemble für Neue Musik in Essen and has conducted many contemporary works, an area of special interest, as well as the works of Zemlinsky, Pfitzner, Reger, Busoni, Schoenberg and Sibelius.
