The only cellist in the last 20 years to be invited for a second time to the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Alban Gerhardt’s profound musicality and charisma have made him one of the most sought-after cellists on the concert circuit. His wide-ranging career has included performances with the Berlin Philharmonic/Thielemann, Boston Symphony, San Francisco Symphony/Tilson-Thomas, Oslo Philharmonic, BBC Symphony and orchestras in Japan, China and Australasia.

Gerhardt’s curiosity and drive has led him to learn more than 60 cello concerti, and his collaboration with composers such as Peteris Vasks, Brett Dean, Jörg Widmann and Matthias Pintscher demonstrate his interest in enlarging the cello repertoire. Similarly, his spearheading of a Romantic Cello Series with Hyperion Records reveals his determination to restate the case for a number of lesser-known works, rescuing them from undeserved obscurity.
